Founded in 2024, the collection Superscripte. Textes sur la photographie contemporaine, offers introductory and synthetic texts in French on contemporary photographic practices in all their diversity, through the prism of a single concept – exhibition, violence, ecology or artificial intelligence, for example. By bringing together texts written by artists, art historians, sociologists and educators, the collection aims to highlight different perspectives and the specific skills that arise from different ways of thinking about images. Designed with photographers, artists, art historians, students, or simply photography enthusiasts in mind, this series aims to provide the keys to understanding certain themes or photographic forms that are omnipresent in today’s visual culture.

The books are published by Éditions du Centre de la photographie Genève at a rate of one to two books per year. They are printed in pocket format and distributed free of charge as ebooks. They are designed by the studio Balmer Hählen. They are distributed by Les presses du réel in Switzerland and internationally.

Who are the photographers who are contributing to the construction of an imagery of violence against women? This text examines photography projects denouncing gender violence in the post-#MeToo era. Social networks have rekindled interest in feminism, influencing visual representations of women’s lives, including images of sexist and sexual violence. This book addresses the ethical dilemmas associated with the display of violent images and proposes alternative strategies for raising awareness, based on fifteen projects by women. The book underlines the importance of regaining control over the representation of women for the purposes of self-affirmation, empowerment, care and struggle.

What is the relationship between exhibitions and photography? Does the exhibition space enhance the malleability of photography and its fluidity within digital media? Does it allow artists to develop experimentation? How do they collaborate with curators? Is the public invited to participate in an original experience? This book sets out to address some of the many questions associated with contemporary photography exhibitions, seen as a means of enriching the experience of art.

How does photography represent our environment? How does it contribute to its destruction? Can it still be a means of action despite everything? From its very beginnings, photography has been inextricably linked to ecology—both through its materiality and through what it depicts. This book presents fifteen artists who forge connections with dynamic ecosystems. Through five chapters organised around emotional registers, the author contextualises these contemporary artistic practices within the history of the photographic medium. She offers an introduction, an invitation to dialogue, and a sensitive and critical examination of the relationship between images and ecology.
