Founded 1984, the Centre de la photographie Genève is one of Switzerland’s leading institutions dedicated to contemporary photography. Throughout the year, it offers a programme of temporary exhibitions and accompanying events, a cultural education programme for school audiences and a programme of activities for professional artists and photographers. It has been publishing the Superscripte collection since 2024. During the renovation of the Bâtiment d’art contemporain, it is continuing its exhibition programmes at Espace Ami-Lullin at the Bibliothèque de Genève and at Maison de l’enfance et de l’adolescence.

History
The Centre de la Photographie Genève (CPG) was founded in 1984 by 11 Geneva-based photographers to defend photography as art, during a decade that saw the emergence of similar initiatives across Switzerland, such as Focale in Nyon, Musée de l’Elysée in Lausanne, and Photoforum Pasquart in Biel. Between 2001 and 2021, under the direction of artist and curator Joerg Bader, the CPG developed an interest in multiple modes of production, dissemination and presentation of photography. This new position developed with a focus on the ‘documentary style’ and visual culture, in constant exchange with other arts, while conceiving the CPG as a place of reflection specifically dedicated to photography. In 2007, the CPG created its own publishing house, Éditions Centre de la photographie Genève, which has been distributed by Les presses du réel since 2014. In 2007, the CPG moved into the Bâtiment d’art contemporain, which also houses MAMCO and the Centre d’Art Contemporain Genève. From 2003 to 2019, the CPG organised the photography trienniale 50JPG (50 Days for Photography in Geneva), often in collaboration with other art venues in Geneva and the surrounding region.
