In 2016, the City of Geneva launched a photographic survey. This important commission is awarded each year to a photographer active in the canton of Geneva, with a theme chosen for a period of three years. This approach allows for the creation of a photographic heritage that is equally of artistic and historical relevance. The exhibition Résistances showcases three photographic surveys, carried out by the artists Rebecca Bowring, Emmanuelle Bayart and Fabien Scotti between 2022 and 2024.

With L’Obscurité a changé de texture [Darkness has changed its texture], Rebecca Bowring seeks to shed light on the subtle yet powerful forms of resistance that influence our daily lives. Inspired by Judith Butler’s reflections on vulnerability in resistance, she reveals the intimate moments when vulnerabilities are transformed into struggles, as they enable deep bonds to be forged between people and thus bring about lasting change.

Ici et maintenant [Here and now], by Emmanuelle Bayart, pays tribute to those who work day in, day out to make a better future possible, and documents their struggles and solidarity in Geneva. Her project bears witness to a civil society that is neither passive nor silent, but is committed to a more inclusive, egalitarian and resilient democracy.

In Face au numérique dominant [In the face of the dominance of digital technology], Fabien Scotti highlights a constellation of initiatives which, each in their own way, seek to retain some form of control over technologies that have become ubiquitous. He focuses on a diverse range of Geneva-based initiatives (institutional, entrepreneurial, co-operative, individual, etc.), which form an archipelago of autonomous practices, linked by shared concerns but without a central hub, hierarchy or unified programme.
