Currently, the media often uses the same generic images to represent asylum and migration: a person in handcuffs, a border guard, a crowd of indistinguishable faces, or boats in distress. They are often stigmatising, and reinforce prejudices linked to crime or insecurity. How can we ‘better’ illustrate exile without perpetuating stereotypes? How can we present more humanising images whilst ensuring respect and dignity for those concerned?
To explore these questions, asile.ch and the Centre de la photographie Genève are organising a round-table discussion bringing together specialists from different backgrounds, specialising in photography and mediatic representation. The aim will be to exchange perspectives, examine current practices and identify ways to promote dignified and diverse representations.
