THE LAWS OF IMPROBABILITY / CPG’S CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE GENEVA HERITAGE

24.06 — 02.08.2020

In collaboration with the Contemporary Arts Fund of the City of Geneva (FMAC) and the Geneva Republic and Canton (FCAC)

With The Laws of Improbability / CPG’s Contributions to the Geneva Heritage , the Centre de la Photographie Genève (CPG), presents for the first time works by artists exposed as world premiere at the CPG, and which later joined the Contemporary art collections of the City of Geneva and of the Geneva Republic and Canton.

The CPG provides an important impetus to the Genevan collections in terms of artistic photography, independently of the collections’ selection criteria or purchase commissions which are democratically renewed every four years. A relevant criteria – albeit not the only one – for purchase commissions is the relationship between the artist and Geneva. What emerges from this exhibition is the fact that the Genevan artistic scene is far richer and more diversified than it is usually understood.

Furthermore, and due to lack of space, preservation techniques and budget, the CPG is unable to store photographs. It is also thank to our regular collaborations that the FMAC and the FCAC also function like the depositories of memory of the CPG’s activities. Many exposed works also benefit from a production patronage by these funds, and function like precious assets for the CPG.

It is these multiple trajectories that inspired the exhibition title : The Laws of Improbability.
