For more than twenty years, photographer Serge Fruehauf has built up a personal archive centered on ordinary constructions and mostly anonymous building details. The editorial approach designed by mutual agreement with the artist is radical. A book is not an exhibition, pages are not picture rails and the playing field is quite different. In the midst of a pandemic of assisted geolocations and digital surveillance, exit the metadata. The photographic works, presented over more than twenty years, will not benefit from dates or location of shooting. The cards have thus been redistributed in order to plunge the reader into his own confusion. Like immersive video games where the player can create invented spaces in real time, Extra Normal is set to the rhythm of geographical and temporal deconstructions and strange and oppressive architectural representations. Without concessions, except for the addition of pagination and the bar code but on a separate strip, Extra Normal, in 177 three-quarter silver photographs in 4/5 format, depicts human obsessions across the spectrum of 'modern architecture".
