Since her first works, Angela Marzullo (b.1971 Zurich, lives and works in Geneva) has explored feminism, making it both the leitmotif of her art, and her personal life, in the manner of avant-garde artists who make no distinction between the two.

During the first 28 days of the show, the artist will perform daily at 11am in the exhibition space, on her work-in-progress “The Origin”.

With her alter ego, Makita, the artist alternates between the role of the feminist intellectual, the witch, or the politically-engaged mother. The exhibition at the CPG will allow the public to discover her photographic work, which underlines the role of the medium in her conceptual process and performative practice. The exhibition is put in perspective with the exhibition by the radical Swiss artist Manon, at the CPG in 2015, today considered the pioneer of performance art in Switzerland, and a precursor to Angela Marzullo.

Angela Marzullo is an artist born in Zurich, Switzerland, of Italian origin on her father’s side. As a videographer, she combines video art and performance exploring feminist questions, which are at the heart of all her artistic endeavors. Angela Marzullo is an artist born in Zurich, Switzerland, of Italian origin on her father’s side. As a videographer, she combines video art and performance exploring feminist questions, which are at the heart of all her artistic endeavors. In 2010 she was awarded a residency at the Swiss Institute in Rome. During that year, she produced an experimental short film, Concettina, based on the letters of P.P. Lutheran Pasolini, with two girls as the main actresses. Since 2003, she has undertaken a critical artistic transmission practice through a new series of works

Mainly known for her performances under the pseudonym “Makita”, the artist critiques the sexist mechanisms that go to construct gendered identity since childhood and envisions culture as a possibility for passing on the feminist struggle. For her first museum show at the CPG in 2018 she produced L’Origine, a daily performance during which she would cut out an almond-shaped slit circumscribed by strips of paper in the pages of the French daily Le Monde. The paper ribbons around the opening became a vulva and pubis. A book going back over this performance has just been brought out by Éditions CPG and Ripopée. OSMOSCOSMOS features a montage of excerpts shot by the audience at the performance when Marzullo opened the first copy of the book, using the letter opener that comes with the publication.
