The body of the Arab woman, the female condition and the quest for self-knowledge are some of the favourite subjects probed by the well-known art photographer Majida Khattari. Most of her work involves a fine superimposition of layers, somewhere between the veiling and the unveiling of the body. Her series Les Parisiennes, featuring a European and an Oriental woman in a setting like that of Delacroix’s paintingFemmes d’Alger,is an outstanding example. Part of the emotional charge of these portraits comes from their relevance to contemporary topics such as Orientalism, female sexuality and wearing the veil in public spaces. In her work, Khattari uses fashion as a medium to critique the alienation produced by neoliberalism.
