João Castilho made a name for himself while still young with the collective documentary piece called Paisagem Submersa (2008). Pushing color contrasts to the limit in the wake of Miguel Branco Rio, he has opened up his range of artmaking to the written word and more recently to sculpture. With media diversification, he distanced himself still further from the classic style of documentary to the point of screening only found footage with Pulsão Escopica. The piece was seen for the first time in 2012 as part of the Segue-se ver o que quisesse show in Belo Horizonte curated by Joerg Bader. With Pulsão Escopica the artist points up a growing phenomenon, i.e., the redistribution of public and private spaces in the Internet age. Pulsão Escopica is made up of images downloaded by the artist during his “strolls” through different chat rooms on the web.
