L'exposition présente les travaux photographiques réalisés par l'artiste Philippe Durand (1963* Lyon) en 2007 aux Caraïbes . Elle s'inscrit dans la continuité de sa démarche artistique, à savoir, la représentation photographique des réalités socio-économiques contemporaines. Depuis 15 ans environ, son oeuvre photographique témoigne d'une part de son intérêt pour une photographie paradigmatique, une photographie qui traite de la photographie elle-même et d'autre part, pour le décalage entre l'image magnifiée par la publicité des signes et des objets produits par notre société de consommation capitaliste et leur fonctionnement réel. Le projet OFFSHORE - NOUS IRONS TOUS AU PARADIS FISCAL - consistant à photographier la part invisible du capitalisme - est l'aboutissement de cette démarche. Aux Caraïbes, il passe de l'hypervisibilité du monde marchand à l'invisibilité complète des flux financiers. La plupart des clichés montrent ce que l'humanité, sous le règne du capitalisme, a fabriqué pour entrer dans notre champ de vision en tant que signe. Des autres photographies représentent des bourgades dans des paysages tropicaux et luxuriants qui hébergent les chambres de compensation par où une grande partie de la richesse produite par le capitalisme mondial transite pour devenir invisible. En confrontant des façades kitsch et insignifiantes des banques offshore à la "marchandise-image", limousines, 4x4, yachts et en voiturettes de golf, Philippe Durand compense l'invisibilité de la finance noire par le régime d'hypervisualité du capitalisme régnant.
Tout en proposant un possible réalisme contemporain, Philippe Durand introduit une troisième composante dans sa série OFFSHORE: beaucoup de clichés représentent des voitures, bateaux où maisons, abandonnés, cassés ou rouillés. En introduisant une dimension entropique, Philippe Durand élargit sa critique de l'économie politique du signe et propose un art réaliste centenaire.

The Photography Center, Geneva, is supported by the Cultural Affairs Department of the city of Geneva, the Modern and Contemporary Art Foundation and the Swiss Federal Office of Culture.
The exhibition presents the photographic work made by the artist Philippe Durand (* 1963 Lyon) in 2007 in the Caribbean, in line with his artistic practice of representing through photography contemporary socioeconomic realities. For about fifteen years ago, his work testifies of his interest, on the one hand, in paradigmic photography, a photography that deals with photography itself and on the other hand in the discrepancy between the image that is magnified by advertising these signs and objects and the way they really work. The project OFFSORE - NOUS IRONS TOUS AU PARADIS FISCAL - consisting in shooting the invisible side of capitalism - is ultimately the achievement of this approach. In the Caribbean , he goes from the merchant world's hyper-visibility to the complete invisibility of the global financial flows. Most of Durand's photographs show what mankind has produced under the reign of capitalism, in order to enter our visual field as signs. The other photographies are showing small towns set in tropical and lush landscapes that are home of the clearing houses where a fair share of the wealth generated by global capitalism passes in transit, only to become invisible. By confronting the kitsch-looking and insignificant fronts of offshore banks with the image - merchandise of limousines, 4x4 SUVs, yachts and Golfbuggies, Philippe Durand compensates the invisibility of "black finance" with the hyper-visibility that is produced by the reigning capitalism.
Whilst suggesting a possible contemporary realism, Philippe Durand introduces a third component to his OFFSHORE series: a large proportion of his photographs represent disused, broken, and rusted cars, boats and houses. By introducing an entropic dimension, Philippe Durand develops his critique of the political economy of the signs. Here is a proposition for realistic art in this beginning of this century.
